WTO Ethics Committee Appointments and OAS Sustainability

The reputation of this country as a sustainable and ethical vacation destination spot has been internationally re-affirmed after Costa Rica’s nomination for two committees regarding this topic in the Organization of American States (OAS) and the World Tourism Organization (WTO).

The first of these two refers to the WTO’s Ethics committee where Costa Rica and Argentina will be the only two Latin American countries with representation in this world forum by the Lic. Hermes Navarro, who will head this Costa Rican representation.

This forum was created in 1999 by the WTO, the same entity that created the World Ethics Code for Tourism, which developed a framework reference for responsible and sustainable development for affairs at the dawn of the new millennium.

Likewise, the commission of the American countries of the OAS, re-elected Costa Rica by popular demand to the Committee of Sustainable Tourism Development, which makes the country, together with the Bahamas, the only representatives from the Americas on this delegation.

This body will be in charge of carrying out issues related to sustainable development, including those that are linked to issues such as climate change and biodiversity.

For Costa Rica, the selection to this committee is a way to internationally back efforts that have been in development with respect to responsible methods and protect the environment that surrounds tourist sites as well as initiatives that seek to reduce carbon emissions.

Rightly so, the topic of sustainability is one of WTO’s main themes. This year, 2008, it is linked to tourism and the challenge that climate change presents.

It’s worth mentioning that at the last WTO meeting, which took place at the end of 2007 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, the Follow-up Committee of the Latin American Network for Tourist MiSMEs met and welcomed proposal for the restructuring to include Costa Rica. They will carry out a regional study on the commercialization of tourist MiSMEs and the results will be made known at the next meeting set for the second semester of 2008.
